SACS Curriculum: Writing
Shakopee Area Catholic School Writing Philosophy Statement
The development of children’s writing from early forms to conventional forms is best achieved through substantial time devoted to writing. Children should have several opportunities to write throughout the school day, along with focused, developmental instruction. Writing is consistently used as a tool for thinking and learning throughout the curriculum.
The teachers at SACS strive to help students adjust their use of written language (convention, style, vocabulary) to communicate with a variety of audiences for different purposes. Writers will develop an understanding of conventional grammar, spelling, and punctuation in order to improve upon their own writing.
Through using the six traits of writing, students will be aware of stylistic options that will produce the most desirable impression on their readers. We believe that in the very act of writing students can form and develop new ideas, make sense of their experience, change their ideas, and find suitable ways to present their new understandings. Students will utilize strategies for prewriting, organizing, revising, and editing their own writing. Students will also use an assortment of techniques for presenting their writing for various audiences and purposes.
