Shakopee Area Catholic School Music Philosophy Statement:
The music teachers of Shakopee Area Catholic School believe music is a part of a well-rounded education. Through singing, playing, speaking and moving students participate in activities that enrich the spirit and help them become musically literate. Our main goal is for students to have an appreciation for all types of music and musicians. We believe music fosters creativity, imagination, cooperation, discipline and responsibility.
The music standards and benchmarks in Shakopee Area Catholic School are derived from the Music Educators National Conference Standards which are
1. Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
2. Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
3. Improvise melodies, variations and accompaniments
4. Compose and arrange music within specified guidelines
5. Read and notates music
6. Listen to, analyze and describe music
7. Evaluate music and music performances
8. Understand relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts
9. Understand music in relation to history and culture

All students are required to practice for participation at weekly masses. Grades 2-5 are required to perform in a Christmas Program in December. Grades K and 1 are required to perform in a program for parents in the spring. Grades 6-8 can volunteer to perform in a Middle School Variety Show in the spring.
