March 21, 2012 MARCH BUZZ! WHAT AN INCREDIBLE MONTH!
Middle School Week
March 12-16 was SACS Middle School Week. Following the theme of “Go Make a Difference” students celebrated with fun dress up days, special activities, the Variety Show, and lunches specially designed by Middle School students. Students also participated in a variety of service projects - sixth grade students made fleece tie blankets to donate to a charity, seventh graders made placemats for residents at St. Gertrude’s, and eighth graders packed meals at Feed My Starving Children. The students put on an amazing Variety Show and the 8th graders were able to defeat the staff in a friendly game of basketball. We finished off the week with “Book Bash” as student’s enjoyed a day of reading. We also had a guest speaker, Shakopee resident Aaron Holm, who shared his story with the students and talked about how he had to change his life after becoming a bi-lateral, above the knee amputee. Through the help of friends and family he was able to adjust to his new life. He decided he needed to “Go Make a Difference” in the lives of others and started a nonprofit foundation called “Wiggle Your Toes” dedicated to helping Amputees and their families regain independence and mobility. We hope all the Middle School students enjoyed the week and are ready to “Go Make a Difference” in the world!

Article too Long for the Church Bulletins from Mr. Breimhorst (March, 2012)
Hello Everyone,
A recent Friday did not end the way I wanted it to… several late issues to attend to, schedule needs, phone calls… and then it was time to leave with the desk not cleared and things not ready for Monday. I was a little frustrated and left myself a post-it note that said “Scott, take a walk.” And that note is what I saw first thing on Monday, so that is what I did.
In the quick morning walk I passed the Middle School Band rehearsing, a new parent touring the building with a smile on her face and paperwork in hand, an elementary music class singing a hymn, middle school students taking aim in their archery unit, a pictorial history of the building of the CEC, a discussion amongst office staff on good baby names for a friend of SACS’ upcoming baby, two incredible smartboard presentations by middle schoolers Aneri and Ashlyn in Mrs. Cagley’s class, and 3rd graders doing online research for a project on animals (during which one student – watching a video clip – cheered “RUN BABY WARTHOG!”). I saw 5th graders buckling down and getting right to work and watched Spanish class students preparing for presentations. I talked to Mrs. Greening about Dr. Suess, her thoughts on how his stories correlate so well to Lent, and how excited the kids get during this time in the library. And I passed through the spot on the 2nd floor where you can see down into the beautifully lit chapel and turning 180 degrees see the Mary courtyard, now ½ covered with snow as the spots where the sun hits for more of the day unveil early signs of a coming green spring. Along the way I was greeted by dozens of students, teachers and volunteers, many of whom said “have a great day Mr. Breimhorst!” And they meant it. And as always I was reminded of what an amazing place this is.
Have a great day!
Scott Breimhorst
PS I’m leaving my “Scott, take a walk” note posted on the bulletin board at my desk…

3rd Grade Performance by Mrs. Klehr's Class (March, 2012)
Mrs. Klehr’s 3rd grade reading class performed a play, Pushing up the Sky. The students worked for two weeks making the props (with help from the parents), memorizing lines, using expression in their voices and in body language. They realized how important team work was!! They did an excellent job! Thank you for all your hard work. I am proud of all of you.
Mrs. Klehr

February 14, 2012 Carla Shutrop - SACS’ Graduate Helping to Make The Community a Better Place!

A majority of elected civic leaders tend to have several years of public service or professional experience under their belts before voters are willing to check the box next to their name on a ballot. That wasn’t the case, however, for Gustavus alumna Carla Shutrop ’09.
Just five short months after graduating from Gustavus with a degree in political science, Shutrop was elected to the school board in her hometown of Shakopee, Minn., in November of 2009. She spent her first year on the board as treasurer, moved to vice-chair last year, and was recently elected chair of the board by her peers in early January.
As chair of the board, Shutrop is responsible for helping to set the agenda for school board meetings which take place twice a month. Her role also dictates that she will serve as the main spokesperson for the board.
“My professors at Gustavus always said they could see me running for office someday and they were always very supportive of that,” she said.

February 9, 2012 | Post by 2nd Grade | Faith Hero Projects and Disciple Writing!
2nd grade students wrote and drew about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus during Religion and Catholic Schools Week...
(Faith Hero Projects in Grade 2)
I am a disciple of Jesus. I help out at school sometimes. Once I helped my brother get his pj’s on without asking. I helped set the table. It feels good to be a disciple.
Madison
I am a disciple of Jesus. I am kind to others. I gave my clothes away. And I pray 3 times a day. It makes me feel good.
Laura
I am a disciple of Jesus. I am kind to others. I brought things for “Birthday in a Bag.” I pray for those in need. And I pray. I am happy.
Vinny
I’m a disciple of Jesus. I pray for those in need and am kind to others. I give money to the poor. It makes me a good person.

January 12, 2012| Post by Megan and Annie, Grade 5 | The SACS Library!
Our library has many kinds of books in it. It has picture books, chapter books, Harry Potter books, Dr. Suess books and so much more. You name it… the library has it! Every month the fifth graders have a book talk where they have to pick out a certain genre for their book. Mrs. Greening sets out books for them. At the library you can donate birthday books and get a sticker with your name on it saying when your birthday is. (The birthday book donation costs twelve dollars. If you want to donate a book it has to be okay with your parents. Or you can also just give the books from your house that you don’t want anymore.)
Our library has many uses. It is used for P.I.P. meetings, board meetings, teacher meetings, Y.M.C.A, and of course classes. It is a great library to do all of those things because it is so big. The space allows the library to have eight circular tables and four chairs for each of them plus computers and a reading area. The middle school students sit there for their classes. It also has a SmartBoard!
Our school’s librarian’s names are Mrs. Greening and Mrs. Bogaard. Mrs. Bogaard teaches the middle schoolers and Mrs. Greening teaches the elementary students. They are both crucial parts of our library. They help us check out books, find books, and sometimes they even read books to us. We (Megan and Annie!) have won a lunch with Mrs. Greening in the marathon silent auction since third grade. We go to Culvers and get food and ice cream. It is a great tradition.

December 14, 2011| Post by Allison, Grade 8 | SACS Student Council
The 2011 Make a Meal Food Drive has come to a close, and it was a mouthwatering success! Students in every grade brought in non-perishable food items from each of the five main food groups (grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, and proteins) and helped their homerooms to “Make a Meal!" All the classrooms competed to see who could bring in the most meals, and the winning classes in middle school, intermediate, and primary grades received a treat basket. Mrs. Armstrong’s homeroom took first place in middle school with 22 meals. The winner for the primary grades was Mrs. Mabee’s 1st grade class with 61 meals, and the school record of 93 meals went to Mrs. Mendez’s 4th graders!
Our goal for 2011 was to collect 4,321 pounds of food, but we exceeded it by almost two hundred pounds! The final weight of all 611 meals was… 4,513 pounds!
Student Council members spent the morning of November 18th loading bags, boxes, and carts full of food into a CAP Agency truck. When they were finished, they gathered together and prayed for the people who will receive the food. SACS students changed the lives of dozens of people with their generosity, and that is what made the 2011 Food Drive a true success.
December 9th, 2011| Post by Mrs. Wermerskirchen | 2nd Grade
Mrs. Wermerskirchen shared this story with us today! Too good not to pass along! -SB
I put up the Christmas Yule log fire from youtube on the classroom smartboard with classical Christmas music for the students to listen to while working on a project. Soon the students started pulling up their sleeves and talking about how warm the room was! One student even went up to the smart board and put his hands up to warm them and then told me that his hands just wouldn’t get warm! Oh how the mind works and plays tricks on us!!
Enjoy.
Laura
